Calvin Schermerhorn is Associate Professor of History at Arizona State University. His most recent book, The Business of Slavery and the Rise of American Capitalism, 1815-1860 tells the story of nineteenth-century human trafficking through the firms that excelled at it and the survivors who told slavery’s inside stories. He teaches slavery and human trafficking in comparative perspective, viewing modern slavery in historical terms and is engaged in public history shining a light on the domestic slave trade. His first book, Money over Mastery, Family over Freedom: Slavery in the Antebellum Upper South views enslaved families struggling against a voracious market for their bodies using strategies the same market held out. He is at work on a synthetic work of American slavery from the Revolution to Reconstruction.
