The Election and Historians Against Slavery. A special message from HAS founder James Brewer Stewart

Dear Friends of HAS,

“We are re-living Germany in 1936….It feels as if someone l love dearly has suddenly died . . . . I’m grieving for my children because of whats ahead of them.”

That’s what I’m hearing, so are you, and that’s what I’m feeling as well.

What to do?—- My suggestion is to remember what Historians Against Slavery is and who we are.

We’re educator/ activists who know how to teach about distinguishing between facts, lies and fantasy. We’re really good at it. We are always going to keep doing it. No other option.

We profess, not enable, excuse or stay silent. That’s instinct. That’s sound ethics.  That’s also empowerment.

We’re exactly who we ought to be and exactly where we need to be to push back hard against racism, homophobia, ethnic bigotry, sexism, misogyny, surveillance and state violence. Thank you, HAS!

We are tight with each other. We trust one another. We carry the load together. No one gets a bright spotlight or the big bucks.—– We’re free labor—- and that means liberated as well as gratis.

Reflect on how our predecessors felt felt after the passage of the Fugitive Slave Law and the Dred Scott Decision. Let’s emulate their example.

I’m honored to be your coworker/ colleague and so grateful for your contributions to Historians Against Slavery.

Respectfully,

Jim
